Earthworks & Excavation FAQs

Common questions about our earthworks and excavation services on the Kapiti Coast.

How much do earthworks cost on the Kapiti Coast?
Costs depend on the scope of work, site access, volume of material to be moved and whether soil needs to be removed from site. Small residential jobs like trenching for drainage might start from a few hundred dollars, while full section levelling or new build site preparation can run into the thousands. We provide detailed quotes after a site visit so you know exactly what to expect.
What equipment do you use for earthworks?
We operate a range of machinery suited to Kapiti Coast conditions including excavators, bobcats, tip trucks and compaction equipment. For smaller residential sites with tight access, we use compact machines that can get through standard gates and work in confined spaces. For larger jobs, we bring in full-size excavators and trucks to move volume efficiently.
How long do earthworks typically take?
It depends on the scale. A simple trenching or small levelling job might take a day or two. Full section preparation for a new build or large-scale cut and fill can take 1–2 weeks depending on the volume of material, site access and weather conditions. We'll give you a realistic timeline in your quote.
Do I need consent for earthworks or excavation?
Most standard earthworks for landscaping purposes - levelling, trenching, drainage - don't require building consent. However, earthworks that affect retaining walls over 1.5 metres, alter stormwater drainage patterns, or involve work near property boundaries may need consent from the Kapiti Coast District Council. We'll advise you during the quoting process.
Can you handle difficult or steep sites?
Yes - difficult terrain is a big part of what we do. The Kapiti Coast has plenty of sloped, uneven and challenging sections. We have the equipment and experience to work on steep grades, tight access sites and properties with difficult ground conditions. If anything, these are the jobs where professional earthworks make the biggest difference to the finished result.
